Known issues to check on the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

2 widely reported problem patterns apply to this model year. That does not mean this car has the fault — many were fixed under warranty or recall — but it is what to check, and what to ask the seller for, before you buy.

• 8-speed automatic transmissionWorth checking

  The 8L90/8L45 eight-speed is widely reported to shudder and clunk on light throttle — the well-known "Chevy shake" — traced largely to the torque converter and transmission fluid.

  What to check: Drive at 25–50 mph on light throttle and feel for a vibration through the floor. Ask whether the torque converter was replaced or the fluid changed to the revised Mobil 1 spec.

• 5.3L V8 (Active Fuel Management)Expensive if it bites

  The Gen V 5.3 V8 with cylinder deactivation is widely reported for collapsed AFM lifters, wiped camshaft lobes and heavy oil consumption, usually announced by a persistent tick.

  What to check: Start it stone cold and listen for a tick or misfire. Ask for oil consumption history and whether lifters or the camshaft have been replaced; an AFM delete or a documented lifter job is a plus, not a red flag.
